The One Thing

This book changed my life.

I recently started listening to The One Thing by Gary Keller, and it really hit home. Like many business owners, I’ve worn every hat at some point: marketing, ops, sales, finance, customer service. Sound familiar?

The book asks a simple but powerful question:

“What’s the ONE thing you can do such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”

It’s a question worth asking, especially if you live in “reactive mode”: Constantly buried in busywork checking items off your to-do list.

The Trap We Fall Into:

Most business owners I know are smart, capable, and endlessly resourceful. But that’s exactly what gets us into trouble. We can do everything, so we try to do everything. And before long, we’re too deep in the weeds to focus on the work that actually moves the needle.

My One Thing:

I’ve asked myself this question a lot lately. What’s my “One Thing”?

For my business, it’s building time-saving, money-generating automations for business owners and leaders. That’s the highest leverage use of my skills, and the most valuable thing I can deliver to clients.

But here’s the thing: for you, automation probably isn’t your One Thing. And that’s fine.

Your One Thing:

Your One Thing might be sales, product, creative direction, client relationships. Whatever it is, it's the part of your business that only you can do best. The challenge is freeing up enough time and mental space to actually focus on it.

You probably see where I’m going with this… Automation!

It’s not the thing, but it’s a tool that can clear the path to the thing.

What's Your One Thing

If you’re stuck in the weeds:

  • You’re the bottleneck for launching promos, new products, or campaigns—because too many things still run through you
  • You’re constantly double-checking your team’s work or jumping in to fix things that should be automated
  • You’ve got great ideas (VIP program, upsells, better retention flows), but no time to actually build and test them

The Takeaway:

If you haven’t asked yourself lately, “What’s my One Thing?”, now’s the time. And if you already know it, the next step is creating the space to actually focus on it.

That’s where I can help. Automation is the tool. Your One Thing is the goal. Let’s get you out of the weeds so you can get back to what really matters.
